Discovering the Area's Rich Heritage

With a tradition of logging, railroad, farming and Native American culture, Merrill, Tomahawk, Rhinelander, Crandon and Antigo have extensive collections of interesting early settlement relics to discover.

Enjoy a self-guided tour of Merrill’s historical attractions by picking up a “Historic Merrill Tour Guide”. The Merrill Historical Museum offers self or guided tours year-round.

Take a step back in time at Tomahawk’s two museums. Enjoy the impressive military display, replica of a one-room school and turn-of-the-century kitchen. Exhibits also include farming and logging memorabilia, as well as other interesting local history. Pay tribute to our veterans at the Tomahawk Veterans’ Memorial.

Step back in time at Rhinelander’s historical sites, including the Oneida County Courthouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Rhinelander Historical Society Museum, Logging Museum Complex and Railroad Museum.

In Crandon, you’ll find the Forest County Museum, Forest County Courthouse, Logging Museum, Camp Five, Wabeno Logging Museum and the “People of the Three Fires” permanent exhibition at the Potawatomi Cultural Center and Museum in Crandon.Visit Langlade County Historical Museum in Antigo and see artifacts from the logging and Indian era, as well as early agricultural and lumber implements.

On the Golf Course

Golfing is a great way to enjoy the fall colors and breathe the crisp autumn air.

While visiting Merrill, try the beautiful 18-hole Merrill Public Golf Course. Work on your swing at Tomahawk’s two great golf courses, Edgewater Country Club and Inshalla Country Club. Rhinelander is home to Pinewood Country Club, Rhinelander Country Club and Rhinelander Northwood Golf Course. Antigo has two courses, the Riverview Country Club featuring nine challenging holes and the Bass Lake Country Club, a beautiful 18-hole course. Try the Nicolet Country Club 18-hole course, near Crandon in Laona.

Fall Water Fun

Each community offers many opportunities to enjoy the fall colors while fishing, boating, canoeing or just relaxing by the water. The Wisconsin River flows from Rhinelander to Merrill and provides an excellent way to journey between these communities. Merrill is home to Class “A” Trout streams. Rhinelander and Antigo offer boat, canoe and kayak rentals, which allow you to travel their waterways to view the rich, fall colors. All of the communities are well-known fishing destinations.
